URBAN CAT LEAGUE NEWSLETTER
Volume 10
See our prior newsletter

Greetings!
It's been a while since our last newsletter and we wanted to let you know what is going on with Urban Cat League (UCL).  In 2 weeks time on May 16th & 17th, we are going to have a booth at the 9th Avenue Street Color LogoFestival and hope you'll come by to say hi.  On May 17th there are also some socialization workshops you may be interested in attending if you want to learn how to socialize feral kittens. We've been working hard with the feral cats in our colonies and have had some good results with adoptions and Trap Neuter and Return (TNR).

Adoptions slow down every summer as people go on vacations but we have some really great cats for which we would like to find a home soon.

If you or someone you know is looking for a feline companion check out the adoption section of this newsletter, our website, or see some of the cats at our partner store - Pets NYC.

Thank you for your support of our organization.  Without our "Friends of Forgotten Felines" we could not help so many of our feline companions.

Sincerely,
Mike Phillips
President, Urban Cat League

Recent Workshops

Much in demand, our Kitten Socialization workshop was part of the Animal Welfare Federation of NJ's Conference 2009.

In December 2008 we also ran a workshop at the Feral Cat Caretaker Bootcamp where we trained 65 rescuers in socialization techniques and also displayed our winter shelters and feeding stations.  2008 Boot Camp

Urban Cat League - at Work

We thank all of our UCL Friends for your support.  So far in 2009 we have adopted out 33 cats and helped out 67 in total!  Without your generous donations and support this would not be possible.  Below are just three of the UCL feline friends who are looking for permanent homes.

Woody on bench

WOODY is worn out after an Urban Cat League socialization session.  He is one of 15 cats rescued and socialized for adoption from his colony of cats living alongside the railroad tracks near the Jacob Javitts Center.

Jewel JEWEL was dumped off in a Macy's bag.  She is a sweetheart who loves people and other cats.  She is looking for a new home.  Who would pass up on such a treasure!

Eugene 2  EUGENE was found limping along railroad tracks on the west side of Manhattan.  He needed surgery to amputate his left front leg, but he is now fully recovered and awaiting adoption.

You can always see cats and kittens available for adoption at the Pets NYC store or on our website UCL Adoptions

One of the cats we trapped, Xena, had to be put down due to severe illness.  She was a mama cat though and just yesterday, Apr 30, we were able to track down her litter of 7 kittens.  Sadly the smallest kitten did not fare well and passed away but the other 6 are doing great being bottle fed.  Watch for them on out Adoptions page soon.

Did You Know?

  1. Female cats can start breeding as young as 4 months old with 3 litters per year - 4 to 6 kittens per litter.
  2. If none of the offspring is spayed or neutered this can result in 420,000 kittens in 7 years.
  3. That number grows to 11.5 MILLION kittens in 9 years!
  4. Only 1 in 12 kittens finds a home through a shelter or humane society.

UCL spayed / neutered 31 cats from the colony near the Jacob Javitts Center since January 2009.

In Memoriam
RUFUS, GOOFEY, XENA and kitten, JACK, BOGEY and ANGEL

Life on the streets can be hard for our feline friends.  Sadly, every so often some of the cats we are trying to help have severe injuries or illnesses and have to be euthanised.  Seven of our feline friends passed away.  It is with sadness we remember the passing of Rufus, Goofey, Xena and her kitten, Jack, Bogey and little Angel - the kitten we found near 48th Street that had already passed away.

Is there anybody mourns your passing?
Anybody waits for you at home?
Were you just a lonely feline wanderer,
Or did you cry in vain outside some door?
Maybe no-one cared enough to love you,
But you'll be treated gently now in death,
Sleep tight, small cat and I will mourn you
And grieve for all the unloved felines who are left.

From the Death of a Stray Cat by S L Smith
