URGENT ACTION NEEDED!

As we all know, Hurricane Katrina has caused massive damage, loss of life, and widespread homelessness in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as Alabama and Florida. Domestic and farm animals were not spared this fate.

Many of us want to help and one of the best ways to do that is to donate money. We have put together a list of groups that are working hard to help people and their animals. It is in no way a definitive one, but the groups below are reputable and need your donations.

National Organizations accepting Donations:

Noah's Wish pet rescue organization in California has established an animal shelter in Slidell, LA, caring for pets until their owners return.

The Humane Society of the US is working to rescue pets that were left behind or perhaps denied entrance into various shelters.

ASPCA Diaster Relief Fund is working with local groups. Looking for vets and vet tech to volunteer and asking for goods to be donated.

UAN working in the field rescuing animals and setting up temporary shelters.

Local organizations accepting donations:

Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

BATON ROUGE, LA. - 9/2/05 - More than 400 animals and a number of veterinarians have sought refuge at Louisiana State University's (LSU) veterinary college campus.

At presstime, students and faculty were caring for pets and wildlife relocated to the university from veterinary clinics in nearby flooded New Orleans and its surrounding areas. The emergency efforts offer some relief in the wake of the nation's largest hurricane disaster on record. LSU campus sustained little damage, but classes have been suspended until Tuesday. In the meantime, the university is coordinating campus relief efforts, veterinary college spokeswoman Ginger Guttner says.

"Everyone is volunteering right now to care for these animals," she says. "Some of our faculty are housing displaced veterinarians."

Financial donations for the animals' care are being accepted through the Dr. Walter J. Ernst, Jr. Veterinary Memorial Foundation at the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association. Call (800) 524-2996 for more information.
